He heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "There is no truth to the omen of the owl, but the evil eye is real."
[Its chain of transmission is hasan]. Tabarani narrated it in 4/31, Hadith 3562, from the hadith of Yahya bin Kathir, and Ahmad narrated it in 4/67 from the hadith of Ali bin Mubarak, both by the same route. It has a daif corroborating narration in Tabarani, 8/192, Hadith 8686, and in Majma al-Zawaid, 5/106.Hayya bin Habis was deemed trustworthy by Ibn Hibban, and Ibn Khuzayma included his hadith. Yahya bin Abu Kathir narrated from him, and he would only narrate from someone he considered trustworthy. Some have listed him among the companions, but the correct view is that he is a successor whose hadith is, at the very least, hasan.
