When the Muslims first arrived in Madinah, they used to gather and estimate the times of the prayers, since no one was calling them to it. One day they discussed this matter.Some of them said, "Adopt a bell like the bell of the Christians."Others said, "Adopt a horn like the horn of the Jews."Then Umar bin Khattab said, "Why don't you send a man to call out for the prayer?"So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Bilal, get up and call out for the prayer."
حدثنا أبو بكر بن النضر بن أبي النضر حدثنا حجاج بن محمد قال قال ابن جريج أخبرنا نافع
كان المسلمون حين قدموا المدينة يجتمعون فيتحينون الصلوات وليس ينادي بها أحد فتكلموا يوما في ذلك فقال بعضهم اتخذوا ناقوسا مثل ناقوس النصارى وقال بعضهم اتخذوا قرنا مثل قرن اليهود قال فقال عمر بن الخطاب أولا تبعثون رجلا ينادي بالصلاة قال فقال رسول الله ﷺ يا بلال قم فناد بالصلاة
Agreed upon [by Bukhari and Muslim]. Muslim narrated it in Kitab al-Salah, chapter on the beginning of the adhan, hadith no. 377, from the hadith of Hajjaj bin Muhammad, and Bukhari narrated it in Kitab al-Adhan, chapter on the beginning of the adhan, hadith no. 604, from the hadith of Ibn Jurayj, with the same content.
