The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a military expedition to Khathaam. Some people sought refuge by prostrating themselves, but they were nonetheless hastily killed. When news of this reached the Prophet ﷺ, he ordered that half the blood-money be paid for them and said, "I disassociate myself from every Muslim who lives among the polytheists."They asked, "Messenger of Allah, why is that?"He replied, "Their two fires should not be visible to one another."
[Its chain is daif] Abu Dawud narrated it in jihad, chapter on the prohibition of killing one who takes refuge in sujud, hadith no. 2645, from Hannad, with this wording. Abu Muawiya Darir and Ismail bin Abu Khalid were both mudallis narrators and they narrated with "an" (without explicit connection).
