He gave the Prophet ﷺ a gift, either a sheep or a she-camel.The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Have you embraced Islam?"He replied, "No."The Prophet ﷺ said, "I have been forbidden from accepting the gifts of the polytheists."
[Hasan] Abu Dawud also related it, in the Book of Kharaj, chapter on the leader accepting gifts from polytheists, no. 3057, from the hadith of Abu Dawud Tayalisi, transmitting it likewise, and it is found in his Musnad, no. 1083. Ibn Khuzayma graded it sahih, and so did Sahih Ibn Jarud, no. 1110, and others. Its chain of transmission is daif, but it has corroborating narrations in Ahmad, 3/402, and elsewhere. See Bukhari together with Fath al-Bari, 5/230, for what contradicts it. So the matter here is one of recommendation, and Allah knows best.
