An army of the Muslim armies, whose commander was Salman Farsi, was besieging one of the fortresses of Persia. The soldiers said, "Abu Abdullah, shall we not charge against them?"He replied, "Let me invite them as I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ invite them."So Salman approached them and said, "I am only a man from among you, a Persian. You see that the Arabs obey me. If you accept Islam, you will have the same rights as we do and the same obligations as we have. If you refuse and insist on remaining in your religion, we will leave you upon it, but you must pay the jizyah by hand while you are subdued."He then spoke to them in Persian, "And you will not be in a praiseworthy state. If you refuse, we will declare war against you on equal terms."They said, "We are not going to pay the jizyah. Rather, we will fight you."The soldiers said, "Abu Abdullah, shall we not charge against them?"He replied, "No."He continued to invite them in this manner for three days, then he said, "Charge against them."So we charged against them and conquered that fortress.

[Its isnad is daif] Ahmad narrated it (5/440, 441) from the hadith of Ata bin Saaib through the same route, but the chain is disconnected, as the author, may Allah have mercy on him, has clarified. There is also a narration on this subject from Burayda [to come, no. 1617], Numan bin Muqarrin [I did not find it], Ibn Umar [Muslim, no. 1730], and Ibn Abbas [Ahmad 1/231, 236, Abd bin Humayd, no. 697, and Darimi, no. 2448].
