The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Avert the legal punishments from the Muslims as much as you are able. If he has a way out, then let him go, for it is better for the leader to err in pardoning than to err in punishing."Hannad narrated to us, Waki narrated to us from Yazid bin Ziyad something similar to the hadith of Muhammad bin Rabia, but he did not attribute it to the Prophet.

Daif. Bayhaqi (8/238) also narrated it from the hadith of Muhammad bin Rabia and from the hadith of Waki through the same route, and its chain of transmission is very daif. It has corroborating narrations, all of them daif. There is also a narration on this subject from Abu Hurairah [Ibn Majah, no. 2545] and from Abdullah bin Amr [Abu Dawud, no. 4376].
