The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about a found item. He said, "Announce it for a year. If someone identifies it, hand it over. Otherwise, take note of its container, its wrapping, its tying string, and its quantity, then make use of it. If its owner later comes, give it back to him."
حدثنا محمد بن بشار حدثنا أبو بكر الحنفي أخبرنا الضحاك بن عثمان حدثني سالم أبو النضر عن بسر بن سعيد
أن رسول الله ﷺ سئل عن اللقطة فقال عرفها سنة فإن اعترفت فأدها وإلا فاعرف وعاءها وعفاصها ووكاءها وعددها ثم كلها فإذا جاء صاحبها فأدها
Agreed upon [by Bukhari and Muslim]. Muslim narrated it in the Book of Lost Property, Chapter on Knowledge of the Container and Tie-String and the Ruling on Stray Sheep and Camels, hadith no. 1723, from the hadith of Abdullah bin Numayr, and Bukhari, hadith no. 2437, from the hadith of Salama bin Kuhayl, with the same wording.
