Uthman said to Ibn Umar, "Go and judge between the people."He replied, "Will you not excuse me, Commander of the Believers?"Uthman said, "What do you dislike about that, when your father used to judge?"He answered, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Whoever serves as a judge and judges with justice, it is enough for him to come away from it breaking even. So what do I hope for beyond that?'"The hadith contains a longer story, and there is also a narration on this topic from Abu Hurairah.

[Its isnad is daif]. Abu Yaala also narrated it, 10/93, hadith 5727, and Ibn Hibban narrated it, hadith 1195, through the hadith of Mutamir with the same wording. Abdul-Malik is unknown (per Taqrib). And on this topic there is a hadith from Abu Hurairah [to come at 1325].
