Do not be excessive in the dowries of women, for if such excess were a mark of honor in this world or a sign of piety before Allah, the Prophet of Allah ﷺ would have been the most deserving of it. I do not know of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ marrying any of his wives or giving any of his daughters in marriage for more than twelve uqiyahs.
[Its chain is hasan]. Abu Dawud narrated it in the Book of Marriage, chapter on the dowry, h: 2106, from the hadith of Ayub Sakhtiyani through this route.Muhammad bin Sirin heard it from Abu Ajfa [Ahmad: 1/407 and others], and also from Ibn Abu Ajfa, so both routes are preserved, as I established in my takhrij of Musnad Humaydi, h: 23. Ibn Hibban graded the hadith sahih (al-Ihsan): 4601, as did Hakim: 2/175, 176.
