The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to us, "Your brother Najashi has died, so stand and pray over him."So we stood and formed rows just as one forms rows over the deceased, and we prayed over him just as one prays over the deceased.
حدثنا أبو سلمة يحيى بن خلف وحميد بن مسعدة قالا حدثنا بشر بن المفضل حدثنا يونس بن عبيد عن محمد بن سيرين عن أبي المهلب
قال لنا رسول الله ﷺ إن أخاكم النجاشي قد مات فقوموا فصلوا عليه قال فقمنا فصففنا كما يصف على الميت وصلينا عليه كما يصلى على الميت
[Its isnad is sahih]. Ibn Majah also recorded it in the Book of Funerals, chapter on what has been said about the funeral prayer for Najashi, no. 1535, and Nasai, 4/70, no. 1977, from the hadith of Bishr bin Mufaddal with the same wording. It is also in Sahih Muslim, Funerals, 22, no. 953, from the hadith of Abu Qilaba from Abu Muhallab with the same wording.There are also reports on this subject from Abu Hurairah [already mentioned at 1022], Jabir bin Abdullah [Bukhari, no. 1334, and Muslim, no. 952], Abu Saeed [Tabarani in Al-Awsat, 5/326, no. 4642], Huzaifa bin Usayd [Ibn Majah, no. 1537], and Jareer bin Abdullah [Ahmad, 2/360, 363].
