The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught me a surah. While I was sitting in the mosque, I heard a man reciting it differently from how I recited it.I said to him, "Who taught you this surah?"He replied, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ."I said, "Do not leave me until we go to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."So I went to him and said, "Messenger of Allah, this man recited the surah you taught me differently from my recitation."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Recite, Ubayy."So I recited it, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, "Well done."Then he said to the man, "Recite."The man recited it differently from my recitation, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Well done."Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Ubayy, the Quran was revealed in seven modes, all of them sufficient and adequate."Abu Abdul-Rahman said, Maqil bin Ubaydullah is not strong in this.
Its isnad is hasan. Ibn Abdul-Barr reported it in Tamhid (8/286, 287) from the hadith of Abu Jafar bin Nafil, through the same chain, and it is also in Kubra, no. 1012.Maqil is hasan al-hadith according to the more correct view, and the majority graded him trustworthy.
