I heard Hisham bin Hakeem bin Hizam reciting Surah al-Furqan, and he recited it with letters that the Prophet of Allah ﷺ had not taught me.I said, "Who taught you this surah?"He replied, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught me."I said, "You are lying. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not teach you it this way."So I took him by the hand and led him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, you taught me Surah al-Furqan, and I heard this man reciting it with letters you did not teach me."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Recite, Hisham."So he recited as he had been reciting.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "It was revealed this way."Then he said, "Recite, Umar."So I recited, and he said, "It was revealed this way."Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, the Quran was revealed in seven modes."
أخبرنا نصر بن علي قال أنبأنا عبد الأعلى قال حدثنا معمر عن الزهري عن عروة عن ابن مخرمة أن
سمعت هشام بن حكيم بن حزام يقرأ سورة الفرقان فقرأ فيها حروفا لم يكن نبي الله ﷺ أقرأنيها قلت من أقرأك هذه السورة قال رسول الله ﷺ قلت كذبت ما هكذا أقرأك رسول الله ﷺ فأخذت بيده أقوده إلى رسول الله ﷺ فقلت يا رسول الله إنك أقرأتني سورة الفرقان وإني سمعت هذا يقرأ فيها حروفا لم تكن أقرأتنيها فقال رسول الله ﷺ اقرأ يا هشام فقرأ كما كان يقرأ فقال رسول الله ﷺ هكذا أنزلت ثم قال اقرأ يا عمر فقرأت فقال هكذا أنزلت ثم قال رسول الله ﷺ إن القرآن أنزل على سبعة أحرف
Muslim reported it in Prayer of Travelers, in the chapter on the explanation that the Quran was revealed in seven modes, etc., hadith 271/818, from the hadith of Mamar. Bukhari reported it in Disputes, in the chapter on the speech of disputants against one another, hadith 2419, and others reported it, from the hadith of Zuhri, through the same chain. It is also found in Al-Kubra, hadith 1008.
