We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when one of the men said, "Messenger of Allah, why don't you let us rest for the night?"He replied, "I fear you will sleep through the prayer."Bilal said, "I will keep watch over you."So they lay down and slept, and Bilal leaned his back against his mount. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ woke up, and the rim of the sun had already risen. He said, "Bilal, what happened to what you promised?"Bilal answered, "Never has such a sleep overtaken me before."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Allah took your souls when He willed and returned them when He willed. Get up, Bilal, and call the people to prayer."So Bilal stood and gave the call to prayer, and they performed ablution, that is, after the sun had risen. Then he stood and led them in prayer.
Bukhari transmitted it in the Book of Prayer Times, Chapter on the adhan being given after the time has passed, no. 595, from the hadith of Husayn, with a similar meaning. It also appears in al-Kubra, no. 919. Abu Dawud also transmitted it, no. 440, from Hannad, in a shortened form.
