Whenever Zayd bin Arqam was asked, "Tell us what you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ," he would reply, "I will not tell you anything except what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to tell us and instruct us to say. He taught us to say, 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from helplessness, laziness, miserliness, cowardice, decrepit old age, and the punishment of the grave. O Allah, grant my soul its piety and purify it, for You are the best to purify it. You are its Guardian and Master. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from a soul that is never satisfied, from a heart that is not humble, from knowledge that brings no benefit, and from a supplication that is not answered.'"
أخبرنا واصل بن عبد الأعلى عن ابن فضيل عن عاصم بن سليمان
كان إذا قيل لزيد بن أرقم حدثنا ما سمعت من رسول الله ﷺ يقول لا أحدثكم إلا ما كان رسول الله ﷺ حدثنا به ويأمرنا أن نقول اللهم إني أعوذ بك من العجز والكسل والبخل والجبن والهرم وعذاب القبر اللهم آت نفسي تقواها وزكها أنت خير من زكاها أنت وليها ومولاها اللهم إني أعوذ بك من نفس لا تشبع ومن قلب لا يخشع ومن علم لا ينفع ودعوة لا تستجاب
