The Prophet ﷺ used to seek refuge from these three things, being overtaken by misery, the gloating of enemies, an evil decree, and severe affliction.Sufyan said, "They are three, but I mentioned four because I cannot recall which one of them is not part of the supplication."
Bukhari transmitted it in the Book of Supplications, Chapter on Seeking Refuge from the Hardship of Affliction, hadith no. 6347, and Muslim in the Book of Remembrance and Supplication, Chapter on Seeking Refuge from Bad Judgment and the Onset of Misfortune and Other Things, hadith no. 2707, from the hadith of Sufyan bin Uyayna, with this same chain. It is also found in al-Kubra, hadith no. 7927.
