The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to seek refuge most often from debt and sin.I asked, "Messenger of Allah, why do you so often seek refuge from debt?"He replied, "Because when a person is in debt, he speaks and lies, and he promises and breaks his promise."
أخبرني محمد بن عثمان بن أبي صفوان قال حدثني سلمة بن سعيد بن عطية وكان خير أهل زمانه قال حدثنا معمر عن الزهري عن عروة
كان رسول الله ﷺ أكثر ما يتعوذ من المغرم والمأثم قلت يا رسول الله ما أكثر ما تتعوذ من المغرم قال إنه من غرم حدث فكذب ووعد فأخلف
Bukhari transmitted it in the Book of Adhan, Chapter: The supplication before the salam, hadith no. 832, 2397, and Muslim in the Book of Mosques, Chapter: What one seeks refuge from during prayer, hadith no. 129/589, from the hadith of Zuhri, with this wording.
