He was riding behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the morning of the Day of Sacrifice when a woman from Khathaam came to him and said, "Messenger of Allah, Allah's obligation upon His servants regarding the pilgrimage has reached my father as a very old man who cannot ride except slumped sideways. Shall I perform the pilgrimage on his behalf?"He replied, "Yes, perform the pilgrimage on his behalf, for if he had a debt you would pay it off."

أنه كان رديف رسول الله ﷺ غداة النحر فأتته امرأة من خثعم فقالت يا رسول الله إن فريضة الله عز وجل في الحج على عباده أدركت أبي شيخا كبيرا لا يستطيع أن يركب إلا معترضا أفأحج عنه قال نعم حجي عنه فإنه لو كان عليه دين قضيتيه
Bukhari transmitted it, Recompense for Hunting, chapter on Hajj performed on behalf of one who cannot stay firmly seated on a mount, no. 1853, and Muslim, Hajj, chapter on Hajj performed on behalf of one incapacitated by illness, old age, or the like, or on behalf of the dead, no. 1335, from the hadith of Zuhri, with this same wording. It is also in al-Kubra, no. 5950.
