Abdullah bin Zubayr reported,

A delegation from the tribe of Banu Tamim came to the Prophet ﷺ.Abu Bakr said, "Appoint Qaqa bin Mabad as their leader."Umar said, "Rather, appoint Aqra bin Habis."They argued until their voices grew loud, and concerning this the verse was revealed, "O you who believe, do not put yourselves forward before Allah and His Messenger" until the end of the verse, "And if they had been patient until you came out to them, it would have been better for them" [Hujurat 49:1–5].

عن عبد الله بن الزبير أخبره

أنه قدم ركب من بني تميم على النبي ﷺ قال أبو بكر أمر القعقاع بن معبد وقال عمر رضي الله عنه بل أمر الأقرع بن حابس فتماريا حتى ارتفعت أصواتهما فنزلت في ذلك {يا أيها الذين آمنوا لا تقدموا بين يدي الله ورسوله} حتى انقضت الآية {ولو أنهم صبروا حتى تخرج إليهم لكان خيرا لهم}
