We waited one night for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to come out for the night prayer. He came out to us when a third of the night had passed, or after that.When he came out, he said, "You are waiting for a prayer that no followers of any other religion are waiting for. Were it not that it would burden my community, I would pray it with them at this hour."Then he ordered the muezzin, who pronounced the iqamah, and he led the prayer.
أخبرنا إسحق بن إبراهيم قال أنبأنا جرير عن منصور عن الحكم عن نافع
مكثنا ذات ليلة ننتظر رسول الله ﷺ لعشاء الآخرة فخرج علينا حين ذهب ثلث الليل أو بعده فقال حين خرج إنكم تنتظرون صلاة ما ينتظرها أهل دين غيركم ولولا أن يثقل على أمتي لصليت بهم هذه الساعة ثم أمر المؤذن فأقام ثم صلى
Muslim recorded it, no. 639, see the two preceding hadiths from Ishaq bin Ibrahim. Bukhari also recorded it, Times of Prayer, chapter on sleeping before the night prayer for one who is overcome by drowsiness, no. 570, from the hadith of Nafi, with the same wording.
