I came to stay with Abu Hashim bin Utbah while he was suffering from a fatal stab wound. Muawiya came to visit him, and Abu Hashim wept.Muawiya asked, "What makes you weep? Is it pain that distresses you, or do you weep over the world, whose purity has departed?"Abu Hashim replied, "Neither. Rather, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave me a charge that I wish I had followed. He said, 'Perhaps you will live to see wealth distributed among various peoples, but all you really need from that is a servant and a mount to ride in the path of Allah.' Yet I lived to see it and accumulated wealth."
أخبرنا محمد بن قدامة عن جرير عن منصور عن أبي وائل
نزلت على أبي هاشم بن عتبة وهو طعين فأتاه معاوية يعوده فبكى أبو هاشم فقال معاوية ما يبكيك أوجع يشئزك أم على الدنيا فقد ذهب صفوها قال كل لا ولكن رسول الله ﷺ عهد إلي عهدا وددت أني كنت تبعته قال إنه لعلك تدرك أموالا تقسم بين أقوام وإنما يكفيك من ذلك خادم ومركب في سبيل الله فأدركت فجمعت
[Hasan] Ibn Majah recorded it in Zuhd, chapter on Zuhd fi Dunya, no. 4103, from the hadith of Jareer bin Abdul-Hameed, and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (al-Ihsan 2/31, no. 667). It has a corroborating witness in Nasai's Kubra, 5/507, no. 9811, and in Ahmad, 5/360, and others, with a hasan chain. See Sunan Tirmidhi (my edition), no. 2327.
