One night, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ delayed the night prayer until the people had slept, woken, slept, and woken again. Umar stood up and called out, "The prayer, the prayer!"Ata said that Ibn Abbas reported, "The Prophet of Allah ﷺ came out, and it is as if I am looking at him right now, with water dripping from his head and his hand placed on the side of his head."Ata gestured to demonstrate. I asked Ata to show me precisely how the Prophet ﷺ had placed his hand on his head, and he gestured to me just as Ibn Abbas had indicated. Ata spread his fingers apart slightly, then placed them on his head so that the tips of his fingers reached the front of his head. Then he drew them together, passing them over his head in this manner until his thumbs touched the edge of the ear nearest the face, then over the temple and the side of the forehead, neither hurrying nor doing anything roughly, but only like that. Then the Prophet ﷺ said, "Were it not that I would impose hardship on my community, I would have ordered them to pray it only at this hour."
Bukhari included it in the Book of Prayer Times, in the chapter on sleeping before the night prayer for one who is overcome by drowsiness, hadith no. 571, and Muslim included it in the Book of Mosques, in the chapter on the time of the night prayer and delaying it, hadith no. 225/642, from the hadith of Ibn Jurayj, with this same account.
