A man came to the Prophet ﷺ wearing an iron ring.The Prophet ﷺ said, "Why do I see you wearing the jewelry of the people of the Fire?"So he threw it away. Then he came back wearing a ring of brass.The Prophet ﷺ said, "Why do I detect on you the smell of idols?"So he threw it away.He asked, "Messenger of Allah, what should I make it from?"He replied, "From silver, but do not let it reach the weight of a mithqal."
أخبرنا أحمد بن سليمان قال حدثنا زيد بن الحباب قال حدثني عبد الله بن مسلم من أهل مرو أبو طيبة قال
أن رجلا جاء إلى النبي ﷺ وعليه خاتم من حديد فقال ما لي أرى عليك حلية أهل النار فطرحه ثم جاءه وعليه خاتم من شبه فقال ما لي أجد منك ريح الأصنام فطرحه قال يا رسول الله من أي شيء أتخذه قال من ورق ولا تتمه مثقالا
[Its chain is hasan] Abu Dawud narrated it in the chapter on rings, in the section "What Has Been Said about the Iron Ring," no. 4223, and Tirmidhi narrated it, no. 1785, from the hadith of Zayd bin Hubab, with the same wording. Tirmidhi said, "It is unique." It is also found in Kubra, no. 9508, and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih, no. 1467. Al-Hafiz discussed it in Fath al-Bari. The hadith of Abdullah bin Muslim is hasan, as mentioned in Nayl al-Maqsud.
