The Prophet ﷺ gave gifts to some men but gave nothing to one particular man among them.Saad said, "Messenger of Allah, you gave to so-and-so and so-and-so, but you gave nothing to that man, even though he is a believer."The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Or a Muslim."Saad repeated his statement three times, and each time the Prophet ﷺ responded, "Or a Muslim."Then the Prophet ﷺ said, "I give to certain men while leaving out others who are dearer to me, giving them nothing, out of fear that they may be cast into the Fire on their faces."
أخبرنا محمد بن عبد الأعلى قال حدثنا محمد وهو ابن ثور قال معمر وأخبرني الزهري
أعطى النبي ﷺ رجالا ولم يعط رجلا منهم شيئا قال سعد يا رسول الله أعطيت فلانا وفلانا ولم تعط فلانا شيئا وهو مؤمن فقال النبي ﷺ أو مسلم حتى أعادها سعد ثلاثا والنبي ﷺ يقول أو مسلم ثم قال النبي ﷺ إني لأعطي رجالا وأدع من هو أحب إلي منهم لا أعطيه شيئا مخافة أن يكبوا في النار على وجوههم
Bukhari transmitted it, in the chapter on faith, the section "When Islam is not based on true reality, etc.," hadith no. 27, from the narration of Mamar. Muslim also transmitted it, in the chapter on faith, the section "Winning over the heart of one whose faith is weak, out of fear for him, etc.," hadith no. 150, from the narration of Zuhri, with the same chain.
