The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was brought a thief, and he said, "Kill him."They said, "Messenger of Allah, he only stole."He said, "Kill him."They said, "Messenger of Allah, he only stole."He said, "Cut off his hand."The narrator continued, Then he stole again, so his foot was cut off. Then he stole during the time of Abu Bakr until all his limbs had been cut off. Then he stole yet again, a fifth time.Abu Bakr said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ knew best about this man when he said, 'Kill him.'"Then he handed him over to a group of young men from Quraysh to put him to death, among them Abdullah bin Zubayr, who loved authority. Abdullah said, "Put me in charge over you," so they appointed him as their leader. Whenever he struck, they struck along with him, until they killed him.

أن رسول الله ﷺ أتي بلص فقال اقتلوه فقالوا يا رسول الله إنما سرق فقال اقتلوه قالوا يا رسول الله إنما سرق قال اقطعوا يده قال ثم سرق فقطعت رجله ثم سرق على عهد أبي بكر رضي الله عنه حتى قطعت قوائمه كلها ثم سرق أيضا الخامسة فقال أبو بكر رضي الله عنه كان رسول الله ﷺ أعلم بهذا حين قال اقتلوه ثم دفعه إلى فتية من قريش ليقتلوه منهم عبد الله بن الزبير وكان يحب الإمارة فقال أمروني عليكم فأمروه عليهم فكان إذا ضرب ضربوه حتى قتلوه

Its chain of transmission is sahih. Bayhaqi reported it, 8/272-273, from the hadith of Hammad bin Salama with the same wording, and he said, Ishaq Hanzali followed him from Nadr bin Shumayl, and it is in Al-Kubra, hadith number 7470. Yusuf is Ibn Saad, Abu Yaqub Basri Jumahi, and Harith was a minor companion.
