The Quraysh were troubled by the case of the Makhzumi woman who had stolen, so they said, "Who will speak to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about her?"They said, "Who would dare to do so except Usama bin Zayd, the beloved of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?"So Usama spoke to him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Are you interceding concerning one of the prescribed punishments of Allah?"Then he stood up and delivered a sermon, saying, "Those before you were destroyed only because, when a noble person among them stole, they would let him go, but when a weak person among them stole, they would carry out the punishment on him. By Allah, if Fatimah, the daughter of Muhammad, were to steal, I would cut off her hand."
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of the Prophets, chapter 54, hadith 3475, and Muslim narrated it in the Book of Punishments, chapter on cutting off the hand of a noble thief or anyone else, and the prohibition of interceding regarding legal punishments, hadith 1688, from Qutayba with the same wording, and it is also found in Kubra, hadith 07386.
