Abdullah bin Sahl and Muhaysa bin Masud bin Zayd set out for Khaybar, which was at that time under a treaty of peace. They separated to attend to their respective needs, and Muhaysa came upon Abdullah bin Sahl writhing in his blood, slain. He buried him and then returned to Medina.Abdul-Rahman bin Sahl, along with Huwaysa and Muhaysa, the two sons of Masud, went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Abdul-Rahman began to speak, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Let the eldest speak first." He was the youngest of the group, so he fell silent, and the other two spoke. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Will you swear fifty oaths so that you may have a right to the blood of your killer, or your companion?"They said, "Messenger of Allah, how can we swear when we did not witness and did not see?"He said, "Then will the Jews clear themselves before you with fifty oaths?"They said, "Messenger of Allah, how can we accept the oaths of a people who are disbelievers?"So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ paid the blood-money for him from his own resources.
