I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbidding the sale of water. Qutayba said, "I did not grasp some of Abu Minhal's words from him as well as I had wished."
أخبرنا قتيبة وعبد الله بن محمد بن عبد الرحمن واللفظ له قالا حدثنا سفيان عن عمرو بن دينار قال سمعت أبا المنهال يقول
يقول سمعت رسول الله ﷺ ينهى عن بيع الماء قال قتيبة لم أفقه عنه بعض حروف أبي المنهال كما أردت

[Sahih]. Ibn Majah reported it in the chapter on pledges, in the section on the prohibition of selling water, hadith no. 2476, from the hadith narrated by Sufyan bin Uyayna, who declared it sahih. It is also in al-Kubra, hadith no. 6257. Tirmidhi said, in hadith no. 1271, hasan sahih. Ibn Jarud recorded it, hadith no. 594, and Hakim included it as meeting the criteria of Muslim, 2/44, 61, and Dhahabi agreed with him.
