A man suffered a financial loss during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ over some fruit he had purchased, and his debts mounted heavily. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Give him charity." So the people gave him charity, but it was not enough to cover his debts. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said to his creditors, "Take what you find, for you are entitled to nothing more than that."
Muslim narrated it in Sahih Muslim, in the Book of Musaqah, in the chapter on the recommendation of writing off part of a debt, hadith 18/1556, from Qutayba with this same chain (see the previous hadith). It also appears in Kubra, hadith 6121.
