We used to be in Medina buying and selling provisions in bulk, and we called ourselves brokers, and people called us by that name too. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to us and gave us a name better than the one we had given ourselves. He said, "Company of merchants, your transactions are attended by oaths and idle talk, so mix them with charity."
أخبرني محمد بن قدامة عن جرير عن منصور عن أبي وائل
كنا بالمدينة نبيع الأوساق ونبتاعها ونسمي أنفسنا السماسرة ويسمينا الناس فخرج إلينا رسول الله ﷺ فسمانا باسم هو خير لنا من الذي سمينا به أنفسنا فقال يا معشر التجار إنه يشهد بيعكم الحلف واللغو فشوبوه بالصدقة
