He was asked about what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade among sacrificial animals.He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up, and my hand is shorter than his, and he said, 'Four are not acceptable as sacrifices: the one-eyed animal whose blindness is obvious, the sick animal whose illness is obvious, the lame animal whose limp is obvious, and the emaciated animal that has no marrow.'"I said, "I dislike for there to be a defect in the horn or a defect in the tooth."He replied, "Whatever you dislike, leave it, but do not forbid it to anyone else."
أخبرنا إسمعيل بن مسعود قال حدثنا خالد عن شعبة عن سليمان بن عبد الرحمن مولى بني أسد عن أبي الضحاك عبيد بن فيروز مولى بني شيبان قال قلت للبراء
نهى عنه رسول الله ﷺ من الأضاحي قال قام رسول الله ﷺ ويدي أقصر من يده فقال أربع لا يجزن العوراء البين عورها والمريضة البين مرضها والعرجاء البين ظلعها والكسيرة التي لا تنقي قلت إني أكره أن يكون في القرن نقص وأن يكون في السن نقص قال ما كرهته فدعه ولا تحرمه على أحد
[Its chain of transmission is sahih]. Abu Dawud reported it in the Book of Sacrifices, chapter on what is disliked in sacrificial animals, no. 2802, from the hadith of Shuba by the same chain. Tirmidhi reported it, no. 1497, and said, "hasan sahih," and it is also in Kubra, no. 4459. Ibn Khuzayma graded it sahih, no. 2912, as did Ibn Hibban, nos. 1046 and 1047, and Ibn Jarud, no. 907, and Nawawi, and Hakim, 1/467-468, and Dhahabi, and others besides them.
