A roasted lizard was brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and placed before him. He extended his hand to eat from it, but those present said to him, "Messenger of Allah, it is the meat of a lizard." He withdrew his hand.Khalid bin Walid asked, "Messenger of Allah, is the lizard forbidden?"He replied, "No, but it is not found in the land of my people, so I find myself averse to it."Khalid then reached for the lizard and ate from it while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ watched.
أخبرنا كثير بن عبيد عن محمد بن حرب عن الزبيدي قال أخبرني الزهري عن أبي أمامة بن سهل عن عبد الله بن عباس
أن رسول الله ﷺ أتي بضب مشوي فقرب إليه فأهوى إليه بيده ليأكل منه قال له من حضر يا رسول الله إنه لحم ضب فرفع يده عنه فقال له خالد بن الوليد يا رسول الله أحرام الضب قال لا ولكن لم يكن بأرض قومي فأجدني أعافه فأهوى خالد إلى الضب فأكل منه ورسول الله ﷺ ينظر
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Foods, in the chapter on what the Prophet ﷺ would not eat until it was named for him so that he might know what it was, hadith no. 5391, and Muslim narrated it in the Book of Hunting and Slaughtered Animals, in the chapter on the permissibility of the dabb (lizard), hadith no. 44/1946, from the hadith of Zuhri through this same chain, and it is also found in Al-Kubra, hadith no. 4828.
