The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever lives in the desert becomes harsh, whoever pursues game becomes heedless, and whoever follows the ruler falls into temptation."The wording is that of Ibn al-Muthanna.
أخبرنا إسحق بن إبراهيم قال أنبأنا عبد الرحمن عن سفيان عن أبي موسى ح وأنبأنا محمد بن المثنى عن عبد الرحمن قال حدثنا سفيان عن أبي موسى عن وهب بن منبه
عن النبي ﷺ قال من سكن البادية جفا ومن اتبع الصيد غفل ومن اتبع السلطان افتتن واللفظ لابن المثنى
Its isnad is sahih. Tirmidhi transmitted it in the Book of Tribulations, chapter on whoever comes to the doors of the ruler is put to trial, no. 2256, from the hadith of Abdul-Rahman bin Mahdi, with this wording. It is also found in his Kubra, no. 4821. Tirmidhi said, hasan sahih ghareeb.Sufyan Thawri stated explicitly that he heard it directly, as recorded by Abu Dawud, no. 2859.
