The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited taking payment for a cat or a dog, except a hunting dog.Abu Abdul-Rahman said, "The hadith of Hajjaj from Hammad bin Salama is not authentic."
أخبرني إبراهيم بن الحسن المقسمي قال حدثنا حجاج بن محمد عن حماد بن سلمة عن أبي الزبير
أن رسول الله ﷺ نهى عن ثمن السنور والكلب إلا كلب صيد قال أبو عبد الرحمن وحديث حجاج عن حماد بن سلمة ليس هو بصحيح
Its chain of transmission is daif. Bayhaqi narrated it 6/6–7, and Daraqutni before him 3/72, from the hadith of Hammad bin Salama, with the same wording. It is also in Sunan al-Kubra, no. 4806, and will come again, no. 4672.Abu Zubayr transmitted this using "an" without specifying direct hearing, as noted previously, no. 594, and it contains another defect as well. It has corroborating reports, but they are daif. Muslim narrated, no. 1569/42, from Abu Zubayr, who said, "I asked Jabir about the price of a dog and a cat." He said, "The Prophet ﷺ forbade that." And this is the preserved version.
