The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by a dead sheep that had been given to a freedwoman of Maymunah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ. He said, "Why didn't you make use of its hide?"They replied, "Messenger of Allah, it is dead."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Only eating it is forbidden."
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Zakat, chapter on charity given to the freedmen of the Prophet's wives ﷺ, hadith no. 1492, and Muslim in the Book of Menstruation, chapter on the purification of the skins of dead animals through tanning, hadith no. 363, from the hadith of Ibn Shihab Zuhri, through the same route. It is also found in Muwatta (Yahya), 2/498, and in Kubra, hadith no. 4561.
