Some people from among the polytheists came to Muhammad and said, "What you say and call to is indeed good. If only you could tell us that there is an expiation for what we have done."Then was revealed, "And those who do not invoke another god alongside Allah" [Furqan 25:68], and there was revealed, "Say, My servants who have transgressed against themselves" [Zumar 39:53].
أخبرنا الحسن بن محمد الزعفراني قال حدثنا حجاج بن محمد قال ابن جريج أخبرني يعلى عن سعيد بن جبير
أن ناسا من أهل الشرك أتوا محمدا فقالوا إن الذي تقول وتدعو إليه لحسن لو تخبرنا أن لما عملنا كفارة فنزلت {والذين لا يدعون مع الله إلها آخر} ونزلت {قل يا عبادي الذين أسرفوا على أنفسهم}
Reference. Muslim narrated it in the Book of Faith, chapter on Islam erasing what came before it, and likewise Hijrah and Hajj, hadith no. 122, from the hadith of Hajjaj. Bukhari also narrated it in the Book of Tafsir, chapter on His saying, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves" [Zumar 39:53]... etc., hadith no. 4810, from the hadith of Ibn Jurayj, through him. It is also found in Kubra, hadith no. 3467.
