We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the year of Khaybar, and we gained no spoils except wealth, goods, and clothing. A man from the tribe of Banu Dubayb named Rifa bin Zayd presented to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ a black slave named Midam. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then set out for Wadi al-Qura. When we reached Wadi al-Qura, while Midam was unloading the saddle of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, a stray arrow struck him and killed him.The people said, "Congratulations to him on Paradise."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Not at all. By the One in whose hand my soul rests, the cloak he took from the spoils of Khaybar is now blazing upon him as fire."When the people heard this, a man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with a sandal-strap, or two sandal-straps.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A sandal-strap of fire, or two sandal-straps of fire."
Bukhari narrated it in "Oaths and Vows," in the chapter "Do land, sheep, crops, and goods fall under oaths and vows?," hadith no. 6707, from the hadith of Malik through this same chain. It is also found in Muwatta (Yahya's recension), 2/459, and in Al-Kubra, hadith no. 4768.
