When a woman among the Jews was menstruating, they would not eat with her, drink with her, or live with her in the same house. So they asked the Prophet ﷺ about this, and Allah revealed, "They ask you about menstruation. Say, it is harm" [Baqarah 2:222], the verse in full. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then commanded them to eat with menstruating women, drink with them, and share their homes with them, and to do everything with them except intercourse. The Jews said, "This man leaves nothing of our practice without going against us."Usayd bin Hudayr and Abbad bin Bishr came and informed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ of this. They asked, "Shall we then have intercourse with them during their menses?"The face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ changed so severely that we thought he had become angry with them. They got up to leave, and just then a gift of milk was brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He sent someone after them to bring them back, and he gave them the milk to drink. By this they knew that he was not angry with them.
