A mule was presented as a gift to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he rode it.Ali said, "If we were to breed donkeys with horses, we would have mounts like this one."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Only those who do not know do such a thing."
أخبرنا قتيبة بن سعيد قال حدثنا الليث عن يزيد بن أبي حبيب عن أبي الخير عن ابن زرير
أهديت إلى رسول الله ﷺ بغلة فركبها فقال علي لو حملنا الحمير على الخيل لكانت لنا مثل هذه قال رسول الله ﷺ إنما يفعل ذلك الذين لا يعلمون
Its isnad is sahih. Abu Dawud narrated it in the book of jihad, the chapter on the dislike of donkeys mating with horses, hadith no. 2565, from Qutayba, with this wording. It is also found in Kubra, hadith no. 4421, and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih, hadith no. 1639.
