Abdullah bin Abbas reported,

One morning we woke to find the wives of the Prophet ﷺ weeping, with the family of each one of them gathered around her. I entered the mosque and found it packed with people. Then Umar came and went up to the Prophet ﷺ, who was in an upper chamber of his. He greeted him, but no one responded. He greeted him again, and again no one responded. He greeted him a third time, and still no one responded. So he turned back and called out to Bilal, then he went in to the Prophet ﷺ and asked, "Have you divorced your wives?"The Prophet ﷺ replied, "No, but I have sworn to keep away from them for a month."He stayed away for twenty-nine days, then he came down and went in to his wives.

أخبرنا أحمد بن عبد الله بن الحكم البصري قال حدثنا مروان بن معاوية قال حدثنا أبو يعفور عن أبي الضحى قال تذاكرنا الشهر عنده فقال بعضنا ثلاثين وقال بعضنا تسعا وعشرين فقال أبو الضحى

حدثنا ابن عباس قال

أصبحنا يوما ونساء النبي ﷺ يبكين عند كل امرأة منهن أهلها فدخلت المسجد فإذا هو ملآن من الناس قال فجاء عمر رضي الله عنه فصعد إلى النبي ﷺ وهو في علية له فسلم عليه فلم يجبه أحد ثم سلم فلم يجبه أحد ثم سلم فلم يجبه أحد فرجع فنادى بلالا فدخل على النبي ﷺ فقال أطلقت نساءك فقال لا ولكني آليت منهن شهرا فمكث تسعا وعشرين ثم نزل فدخل على نسائه
