There were three legal rulings established through Barirah's case.Her owners wanted to sell her on the condition that they retain her right of guardianship. Aishah mentioned this to the Prophet ﷺ, and he said, "Buy her and free her, for the right of guardianship belongs only to the one who frees the slave."So Aishah bought her and freed her. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave Barirah the choice regarding her marriage, and she chose herself.People used to give her charity, and she would in turn give some of it to us as a gift. Aishah mentioned this to the Prophet ﷺ, and he said, "Eat it, for it is charity to her and a gift to us."
أخبرني محمد بن آدم قال حدثنا أبو معاوية عن هشام عن عبد الرحمن بن القاسم عن أبيه
كان في بريرة ثلاث قضيات أراد أهلها أن يبيعوها ويشترطوا الولاء فذكرت ذلك للنبي ﷺ فقال اشتريها وأعتقيها فإنما الولاء لمن أعتق وأعتقت فخيرها رسول الله ﷺ فاختارت نفسها وكان يتصدق عليها فتهدي لنا منه فذكرت ذلك للنبي ﷺ فقال كلوه فإنه عليها صدقة وهو لنا هدية
Muslim narrated it, no. 1504/10 - see the preceding hadith - from the narration of Abu Muawiya Dareer, and Bukhari, in the chapter on Gifts, Chapter on Accepting a Gift, no. 2578, from the narration of Abdul-Rahman bin Qasim, both at length and in brief, and it is in Kubra, no. 5641.
