The Messenger of Allah ﷺ rejected Uthman's request to remain celibate, and had he granted him permission, we would have castrated ourselves.
أخبرنا محمد بن عبيد قال حدثنا عبد الله بن المبارك عن معمر عن الزهري عن سعيد بن المسيب
لقد رد رسول الله ﷺ على عثمان التبتل ولو أذن له لاختصينا
Reported by Muslim, in the Book of Nikah, in the chapter on the recommendation of marriage for one whose soul longs for it and who can afford its expenses, hadith no. 1402, from the hadith of Ibn Mubarak, and by Bukhari, in the Book of Nikah, in the chapter on the dislike of celibacy and castration, hadith nos. 5073 and 5074, from the hadith of Zuhri through the same chain. It is also found in Sunan al-Kubra, hadith no. 5223.
