A man came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was delivering a sermon from the pulpit and asked, "Tell me, if I fight in the cause of Allah with patience, seeking reward, advancing and not retreating, will Allah forgive my sins?"He replied, "Yes."Then he fell silent for a moment and said, "Where is the one who asked just now?"The man said, "Here I am."The Prophet ﷺ asked, "What did you say?"The man repeated, "Tell me, if I am killed in the cause of Allah with patience, seeking reward, advancing and not retreating, will Allah forgive my sins?"He replied, "Yes, except for debt. Jibreel just whispered that to me."
أخبرنا محمد بن بشار قال حدثنا أبو عاصم قال حدثنا محمد بن عجلان عن سعيد المقبري
جاء رجل إلى النبي ﷺ وهو يخطب على المنبر فقال أرأيت إن قاتلت في سبيل الله صابرا محتسبا مقبلا غير مدبر أيكفر الله عني سيئاتي قال نعم ثم سكت ساعة قال أين السائل آنفا فقال الرجل ها أنا ذا قال ما قلت قال أرأيت إن قتلت في سبيل الله صابرا محتسبا مقبلا غير مدبر أيكفر الله عني سيئاتي قال نعم إلا الدين سارني به جبريل آنفا
[Sahih] Ibn Abu Asim narrated it in al-Jihad: 12 from the hadith of Ibn Ajlan through this route, and Abbad bin Ishaq followed him in narrating it, as did Abu Sakhr Humayd bin Ziyad and Abu Mashar, from Saeed Maqburi, from Abu Hurairah, through this route. The narration that follows is the one judged to be preponderant by Daraqutni, Abu Hatim Razi, and others. The hadith is in al-Kubra, no. 4363, and it has very many corroborating narrations.
