A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked, "Messenger of Allah, which of the people is the best?"He replied, "One who strives with his life and wealth in the path of Allah."The man asked, "Then who, Messenger of Allah?"He answered, "Then a believer in some mountain pass who fears Allah and spares people from his harm."
أخبرنا كثير بن عبيد قال حدثنا بقية عن الزبيدي عن الزهري عن عطاء بن يزيد
أن رجلا أتى رسول الله ﷺ فقال يا رسول الله أي الناس أفضل قال من جاهد بنفسه وماله في سبيل الله قال ثم من يا رسول الله قال ثم مؤمن في شعب من الشعاب يتقي الله ويدع الناس من شره
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Leadership, chapter "The Merit of Jihad and Guarding the Frontier," Hadith 1888, from the hadith of Muhammad bin Walid Zubaydi, through him, and it is in Al-Kubra, Hadith 4313. Bukhari mentioned it without a full chain, Hadith 6494, from the hadith of Zubaydi, through him. Bukhari also narrated it in the Book of Jihad, chapter "The Best of People Is a Believer Who Strives with His Life and Wealth in the Path of Allah," Hadith 2786, from the hadith of Zuhri, through him.
