The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me on the morning of Aqaba, while he was on his mount, "Pick up some pebbles for me." So I picked up for him some small pebbles, the size of those used in a sling. When I placed them in his hand, he said, "With the like of these. And beware of extremism in religion, for what destroyed those before you was extremism in religion."
أخبرنا يعقوب بن إبراهيم الدورقي قال حدثنا ابن علية قال حدثنا عوف قال حدثنا زياد بن حصين عن أبي العالية قال
قال لي رسول الله ﷺ غداة العقبة وهو على راحلته هات القط لي فلقطت له حصيات هن حصى الخذف فلما وضعتهن في يده قال بأمثال هؤلاء وإياكم والغلو في الدين فإنما أهلك من كان قبلكم الغلو في الدين
[Its chain of transmission is sahih]. Ibn Majah narrated it in the chapters on the rites of Hajj, chapter on the size of the pebbles for the stoning, no. 3029, from the hadith of Awf Arabi, with this wording. It is also found in Kubra, no. 4063. Ibn Khuzayma graded it sahih, no. 2867, as did Ibn Hibban, no. 1011, and Hakim, 1/466, and Dhahabi.
