He presented a wild donkey to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was at al-Abwa or Waddan, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned it to him. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw the look on my face, he said, "We only returned it to you because we are in the state of ihram."
أخبرنا قتيبة بن سعيد عن مالك عن ابن شهاب عن عبيد الله بن عبد الله بن عتبة عن عبد الله بن عباس
أنه أهدى لرسول الله ﷺ حمار وحش وهو بالأبواء أو بودان فرده عليه رسول الله ﷺ فلما رأى رسول الله ﷺ ما في وجهي قال أما إنه لم نرده عليك إلا أنا حرم
Bukhari related it in "Recompense for Game," chapter "If a live wild donkey is presented as a gift to someone in the state of ihram, it is not accepted," hadith no. 1825, and Muslim related it in "Hajj," chapter "Prohibition of hunting game for one in the state of ihram," hadith no. 1193, both from the hadith of Malik through this same chain. It also appears in Muwatta (Yahya's recension), 1/353, and in Sunan Kabir, hadith no. 3801.
