The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed tamattu in the Farewell Pilgrimage, combining umrah with hajj, and he brought a sacrificial animal which he drove along with him from Dhul Hulayfah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ began by entering ihram for umrah, then he entered ihram for hajj. The people performed tamattu with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, combining umrah with hajj. Some of the people had brought sacrificial animals and driven them along, while others had not brought any. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Makkah, he said to the people, "Whoever among you has brought a sacrificial animal, nothing that has been forbidden to him in ihram becomes lawful until he completes his hajj. Whoever has not brought a sacrificial animal should perform tawaf around the House and walk between Safa and Marwa, then trim his hair and exit ihram. Then he should enter ihram for hajj and offer a sacrifice. Whoever cannot find a sacrificial animal should fast three days during the hajj and seven days when he returns to his family."When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Makkah, he performed tawaf. He first touched the corner, then he walked briskly for three of the seven circuits and walked normally for four. When he completed his tawaf around the House, he prayed two rakahs at the Station, then he gave the salam and departed. He came to Safa and made seven rounds between Safa and Marwa. He did not exit from anything that had been forbidden to him in ihram until he had completed his hajj, sacrificed his animal on the Day of Sacrifice, and performed the tawaf of ifadah around the House. Then everything that had been forbidden to him became lawful again. Those among the people who had brought sacrificial animals and driven them along did the same as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had done.
Bukhari narrated it in Hajj, the chapter on one who drives sacrificial animals with him, hadith 1691, and Muslim narrated it in Hajj, the chapter on the obligation of the sacrificial offering for one performing tamattu and that if he cannot afford it he must fast, hadith 1227, from the hadith of Layth bin Saad. It is also in Al-Kubra, hadith 3712.
