The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Give in charity."A man said, "Messenger of Allah, I have a Dinar."He said, "Spend it on yourself."The man said, "I have another."He said, "Spend it on your wife."The man said, "I have another."He said, "Spend it on your child."The man said, "I have another."He said, "Spend it on your servant."The man said, "I have another."He said, "You know best."
Its isnad is hasan. Abu Dawud narrated it in the Book of Zakat, chapter on maintaining family ties, no. 1691, from the hadith of Muhammad bin Ajlan, with the same wording, and the explicit statement of direct hearing is found in Ahmad, 2/251, 471. It is also found in Kubra, nos. 2314, 2315. Ibn Hibban graded it sahih, no. 828, and Hakim graded it as meeting the conditions of Muslim, 1/415, and Dhahabi agreed with him at 2315. Some parts of the hadith have corroborating narrations in Bukhari's Adab al-Mufrad, no. 750, and elsewhere.
