The Prophet ﷺ was asked which deeds are the best.He replied, "Faith without doubt, jihad without misappropriation of spoils, and an accepted pilgrimage."He was asked, "Which prayer is the best?"He answered, "The one with the longest standing."He was asked, "Which charity is the best?"He answered, "The effort of one with little to give."He was asked, "Which migration is the best?"He answered, "Migrating away from what Allah has forbidden."He was asked, "Which jihad is the best?"He answered, "That of one who strives against the polytheists with his wealth and his life."He was asked, "Which death in battle is the most honorable?"He answered, "That of one whose blood is shed and whose horse is slain."
أخبرنا عبد الوهاب بن عبد الحكم عن حجاج قال ابن جريج أخبرني عثمان بن أبي سليمان عن علي الأزدي عن عبيد بن عمير
أن النبي ﷺ سئل أي الأعمال أفضل قال إيمان لا شك فيه وجهاد لا غلول فيه وحجة مبرورة قيل فأي الصلاة أفضل قال طول القنوت قيل فأي الصدقة أفضل قال جهد المقل قيل فأي الهجرة أفضل قال من هجر ما حرم الله عز وجل قيل فأي الجهاد أفضل قال من جاهد المشركين بماله ونفسه قيل فأي القتل أشرف قال من أهريق دمه وعقر جواده
Its chain of transmission is hasan. It was narrated by Abu Dawud in the Book of Prayer, Chapter on Length of Standing, hadith no. 1449, from the hadith of Hajjaj bin Muhammad, with this wording. It is also found in Al-Kubra, hadith no. 2305.
