During the time of the Prophet ﷺ, people used to give the zakat al-fitr as a sa of barley, dates, hulled grain, or raisins.
أخبرنا موسى بن عبد الرحمن قال حدثنا حسين عن زائدة قال حدثنا عبد العزيز بن أبي رواد عن نافع
كان الناس يخرجون عن صدقة الفطر في عهد النبي ﷺ صاعا من شعير أو تمر أو سلت أو زبيب
[Its chain of transmission is hasan] Abu Dawud narrated it in the Book of Zakat, Chapter on how much is given in Zakat al-Fitr, hadith no. 1614, from the hadith of Husayn bin Ali Jafi, with this wording. It is also found in Al-Kubra, hadith no. 2295.
