It was said to the Prophet ﷺ, "There is a man who fasts every day."He replied, "I would prefer that he did not eat at all."They said, "What about two-thirds of the year?"He said, "Too much."They said, "Then half of it?"He said, "Too much."Then he said, "Shall I not tell you of what removes the rancor of the heart? Fasting three days of every month."
أخبرنا محمد بن بشار قال حدثنا عبد الرحمن قال حدثنا سفيان عن الأعمش عن أبي عمار عن عمرو بن شرحبيل
قيل للنبي ﷺ رجل يصوم الدهر قال وددت أنه لم يطعم الدهر قالوا فثلثيه قال أكثر قالوا فنصفه قال أكثر ثم قال ألا أخبركم بما يذهب وحر الصدر صوم ثلاثة أيام من كل شهر
[Sahih] Abdul-Razzaq reported it in al-Musannaf, 4/296, no. 8767, from Sufyan Thawri, from Amash, with this wording, and they narrated using "ana." The hadith has many corroborating narrations, including the one that follows, no. 2389, and the hadith is also in al-Kubra, no. 2693.* Abu Ammar is al-Hamdani.
